Enough is enough

On Saturday Canny Ong was cremated. May she rest in peace. As her husband and family seek closure, despite the pain of losing a loved one, I would have expected the media to show some sensitiveness in their reporting of the case henceforth.

But reading the Sunday Mail yesterday and today's Malay Mail, leaves me very disappointed. The paper continued to front-paged the case and carried pages on interviews with the wife of the suspected rapist/murderer and several other persons, an expert's profiling of a rapist and even a special report on serial rapist. Don't the editors know that running such stories constitute a reminder of a painful and tragic event and hinders the healing process of the people close to Canny. This is tabloid journalism at its worst.

Come to think of it, this insensitivity to other people's suffering is one characteristic of the "ugly" Malaysian. How else could you explain the stopping or slowing down at an accident site, not to help but just to get a glimpse of the damage and casualties and worst still, for some, to get the registration number of the accident car for betting. And what about the vernacular press penchant for publishing gory photographs of accident and crime victims.

Sometimes, we Malaysians must look deep into ourselves and admit our faults. It is better to self criticised than have others do it.
